A good start set me up well for the rest of the day. I had decided that I should aim to start running soon after 9 am which means having breakfast before 8 am. I managed that today and was rewarded with a beautiful crisp sunny morning.
I had planned out a route that would take me over the hill on to the side of the next valley to overlook the river Derwent. My run took me past Castletop Farm, the childhood home of the children’s author Alison Uttley. There was no one else at all on the footpaths in Bow Woods where I have run so often with my Monday Social Running group. For the first time in a long time I ran just over 10 k and with nearly 300m climb I was pleased to still feel good at the end. The endorphins did their stuff and I am still feeling relaxed now at the end of the day.
This afternoon I was amused to find myself looking forward to the social excitement of a friend delivering a veg box and other odd bits of food. I then found myself enjoying taking a leisurely approach to cooking a nice meal. It was one of my ‘combination’ recipes that adapts one dish for a meat eater who will only eat hidden vegetables and a vegetarian on a Low GI diet.. I start with a shared element, in this case a sauce of tomatoes cooked with onion, carrots celery and herbs. Half of this I use to make a meat sauce with minced beef, the other half is mixed with green lentils. I prepare slices of potato (to go with the meat) and aubergine (to go with the lentils). These are layered up with a sauce of cottage cheese, milk and egg in individual dishes and topped with grated cheese. This makes two very different versions of something like Moussaka.
My day was rounded off nicely by the news that one granddaughter had managed to cycle 2 miles almost unaided. With so little traffic about it is proving possible, even for those living on Steel Bank in Sheffield, to find roads sufficiently quiet and level for children to learn to ride.

I finally got out myself today too after my 4 day 6 hrs a day zoom tutoring extravaganza. It was a gloriously sunny day here as well and after spending the morning processing the aftermath of our shared study experience and setting out on its follow ups, I finally got going around 3.00pm!! I wanted to investigate a walk up to Llech Ddu Spur, a handy scramble that “delivers the scrambler just about to the summit of Carnedd Daffyd”. I found the route, crossed the valley at the foot of Carnedd Daffydd and picked up a handy route down that delivered me back to Bethesda high street. It was lovely to pass, at a suitable distance a couple of friends from the village who were also enjoying the glory of having the Carneddi on our door step. We had a good catch up and then all went on our way. Only when I got back home to watch the evening news was I brought back to some of the horrors of our present situation. Hunger rearing its horrendous head in a very personal way with someone I’ve helped in the past desperate for food now the food banks not functioning so well and hunger riots on the news in Africa. Your receipt sounds very good but I was not in the mood for food myself this evening.
I do find it better to face the news earlier in the day.
