Getting stuck in to a physically challenging gardening job is one of the best ways I know of picking myself up when I have been letting woes of the world get to me. I know that the only thing I can do to be useful is stay at home and keep myself well but it is easy to overwhelmed with sadness about the plight of others. To deal with my distress today I have converted a triangle of rough weedy ground into a potato bed, a five stage process.
Tomorrow I will plant the chitted potatoes so that the shoots just emerge through the cardboard but are well protected by the mulch. A satisfying job that cheered me up no end.

Ooh, that does look like a good way to avoid heavy digging and good, clear instructions. Neat selection of cardboard. I wonder if the potatoes break the soil up a bit as they grow and make it easier for digging up the pots in autumn. Looks great. Xx
The potatoes all grow above the seed potato so they are all in the mulch, should be very easy to pull aside to harvest. The mulch should break down into a nice surface compost layer for planting into in future years and there should be no need to dig the soil. So no breaking up of the soil’s ecosystem and no releasing of Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere. Pity it is on such a small scale that it is not going to change the world.
